Project management is a service often overlooked by clients who can be sceptical about the budget attributed to it. Yet it’s arguably the most important aspect of ensuring successful project delivery.

But first, what does a project manager actually do? They are responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to guarantee that they are completed on time, within scope, and in accordance with each client’s objectives and requirements.

Second, why is project management so important? I believe it plays a fundamental role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of every project. In my 7 years’ experience, it is key to exercising the control and seamless coordination essential for any project. It helps create an environment so all connected teams and individuals can easily execute the project, minimise risks, control costs, meet deadlines and achieve the strategic objectives.

Here are 8 reasons why the role of project manager is so crucial.

1. leadership: providing direction and accountability, ensuring efficient teamwork, clear roles and effective communication.

2. clear objectives: breaking down projects into tasks, maintaining clarity, focus and alignment with objectives while also enabling rapid risk identification and adaptation.

3. project plans: setting achievable goals that enhance the project’s quality, timelines and budgets (avoiding over-ambitious estimates while preventing delays and overspending).

4. quality control: enforcing quality control at every stage to maintain high-quality outputs.

5. risk management: identifying, quantifying and mitigating risks, e.g. the prevention of potential derailing issues and the adaptation of plans to changing circumstances.

6. orderly process: establishing structured processes, defining responsibilities, streamlining tasks and ensuring consistent progress towards strategic goals.

7. continuous oversight: tracking and reporting project progress

8. manage success/failure: learning from things that have gone well and things that haven’t leads to continuous and improved project outcomes.

I hope this gives you some insights into the (albeit not sexy) value that project management brings to each and every project as well as the vital role it plays from concept through to completion.
