Redtorch, the research, content and creative agency, has today published the 8th edition of the annual SportOnSocial League Table.
The SportOnSocial League Table 2024 ranks all 42 summer and winter Olympic International Federations (IFs) by measuring their social media performance over the last 12 months.
Volleyball World (FIVB) tops the SportOnSocial League Table for the second year running, with strong social media engagement across all platforms, including being the no.1 IF on X/Twitter and YouTube. FIVB amassed more views on YouTube than any other IF in the league table.
Overall, Olympic IFs doubled their social engagement to 4.4 billion – a +125% increase from the 2023 report and the greatest rise in SportOnSocial League Table history.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the highest-placed new entry in 11th place following confirmation of cricket as one of five new sports to join the Olympic Programme at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The International Handball Federation (IHF) is the highest climber in the SportOnSocial League Table, rising seven places to 23rd. IHF’s social success was in part credited to launching a new TikTok channel, which recorded impressive video views and engagement.
The top 10 ranking IFs are:
The research and data for the last year shows that the greater number of international sporting events held across summer and autumn helped to increase social media engagement during that period of the year compared to other times. Furthermore, sports fans used social platforms like X/Twitter and Facebook as a source of news for match/tournament results.
The rise of TikTok as a fan engagement tool is a major highlight in the 2024 report – with a 36% increase in engagement compared to the previous year. TikTok also saw greater engagement away from IF events as it became a key platform to tell compelling non-event stories by publishing, for example, athlete lifestyle features, behind-the-scenes and archive footage.
Chris Argyle-Robinson, Research & Strategy Director, Redtorch said:
