Welcome to #SportOnSearch! Building on our industry-leading #SportOnSocial, #SportOnSearch ranks 35 of the world’s leading sports properties based on worldwide ‘Search’ on Google Trends.
Specifically, we’ve examined data from 5 years of search history and compared 2021 figures against the previous four years.
The FA Women’s Super League enjoyed the highest growth in interest. How? Through increased investment by clubs, and from the exposure gained through major broadcasting deals with BBC and Sky.

Football leagues in Europe reported strong results as star footballers moved clubs.
Golf sustained global interest throughout Covid which helped tournaments such as The Masters, The Open, and the PGA Tour.
Wimbledon experienced a 100+% rise in search interest in 2021 as it benefitted from excitement generated on its return after the 2020 tournament was cancelled.
Based on the data, we give forecasts for the year ahead:
- continued growth for women’s sport
- continued growth for America’s biggest leagues
- replication of pre-pandemic success for the Six Nations as fans return to stadiums
- success for major cycling tours during a quieter summer of sport
